Infectious diseases continue to be one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. New pathogens continue to emerge, causing unforeseen outbreaks and leading to events such as the influenza pandemic in 2009, the Zika epidemic in 2016 and the current SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Epidemiology provides key tools for assessing and responding to these health threats in the population. This course introduces the aims and scope of infectious disease epidemiology through lectures and interactive practical exercises. We will discuss the key concepts of pathogen transmission dynamics, infectious disease surveillance and prevention and control strategies. In addition, students are introduced to the dynamic mathematical modeling of infectious diseases, with a focus on practical applications. The course is taught by lecturers from the University of Münster as well as external experts. All participants who attend the entire course and successfully complete the coursework will receive a certificate of attendance (2 ECTS credits).
