When time is running out to make decisions during a pandemic, we need more than just the expertise of individual experts. MONID—the modeling network for severe infectious diseases—brings together researchers from various disciplines across Germany who can quickly provide reliable forecasts.
The network was launched in 2022 by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology, and Space—as a direct response to the lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic.
In early 2026, MONID entered its second funding phase. The network is broadening its scope to include other respiratory diseases—ranging from seasonal influenza to RSV. New research teams are also investigating infections transmitted by mosquitoes or ticks, as well as multidrug-resistant hospital-acquired pathogens.
