The BMFTR-funded MONID research network enters its second funding period

Infectious diseases are a constant challenge for healthcare systems and populations worldwide. The Modeling Network for Major Infectious Diseases (MONID) was launched in 2022 to better tackle these acute problems in the future, particularly as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. MONID entered its second funding phase in January 2026. The modeling network brings together seven new projects funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR), which will address various issues related to the diagnosis, modeling, treatment and prevention of infectious diseases. In contrast to the first funding period, the focus will be on diseases transmitted by vectors, e.g. ticks or mosquitoes, as well as respiratory diseases. The aim of the network is, among other things, to build up and expand modeling expertise in Germany and to provide further training for young scientists.

On On 16 and 17 February 2026, a kick-off meeting was held at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg with the coordinators of the associated consortia, which was organized by the superordinate coordination office. The projects ADAPTI_M, COMPANION, DREAM_EP, EPISERVE, HABITRACK, TwinChain and VBD_MODE were presented, rules of procedure were introduced, overarching working groups were formed and further joint activities were planned. Together, the seven research networks form an interdisciplinary network that exchanges and discusses research results, coordinates methods and acts as a point of contact for political and social decision-makers. The first major joint event of the 2nd funding period is already just around the corner: the 4th MONID Conference on Modeling Infectious Diseases, which will take place on May 20-22, 2026 at the Leopoldina in Halle (Saale), Germany.
