MONID Workshop 2025 “Modeling diseases with the German Epidemic Microsimulation System (GEMS)” has successfully taken place

On November 24 and 25, 2025, the MONID Coordination Office, in cooperation with the OptimAgent project, organized a workshop on “Modelling diseases with the German Epidemic Microsimulation System (GEMS)” at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg in Halle (Saale).

GEMS is the main result of the OptimAgent project (OptimAgent). It is a powerful, resource-efficient and user-friendly system for modeling respiratory infections based on a comprehensive model of the German population. The software, which comprises only a few lines of code, also offers advanced functions for evaluating and visualizing the results.

The participants learned how to conduct simulation experiments with GEMS, simulate complex intervention strategies such as vaccination, isolation, testing, contact tracing or school closures, visualize the simulation results and compare different intervention strategies. We would like to thank all participants for their active participation and motivation throughout the workshop.

The workshop was led by Dr. Johannes Ponge from the Chair of Information Systems and Logistics, Institute of Information Systems, University of Münster.
